2012: The Year of New Habits

I'm not a big resolutions girl.

In 2006, my mom said "Instead of trying to work out or eat healthier this year, let's get our passports. That will be our goal for the year." Two months later, I found tickets to London & a hotel near Hyde Park for 10 days for $800/pp. My mom thought we were just getting our passports that year but I thought bigger. We booked it and got our passports. That September, we had an incredible vacation together.

Being a new year, it's always a time for people to say "I'm going to be a better person by_____." It's a nice thought but most people end up forgetting their resolutions after a few weeks (or days). Many have no idea why they decided to do it in the first place. Most of these resolutions are about eating healthier, taking care of our bodies, exercising more, doing things on a daily basis... but those should be things we make habits, not resolutions.

With 2011 being my year of intentionality (at Sisarina AND in my personal life), I've made 2012 a year of leadership for Sisarina and a year of habit-forming for my personal life. Throughout December, I started making new habits of exercising at least 30-minutes a day, spending more time praying and giving myself some quiet time. This showed me that determination will get me everywhere and what I succeeded most at was the exercising (I know, shocker). So, it's time for me to create more new habits and to pound in the ones I've recently created.

GOALS FOR 2012:
BODY:
    - Run 1200 miles
    - Run 150 of those miles completely barefoot
    - Bike 300 miles outdoors
NUTRITION:
    - detox Jan 1-28 (no sugar, dairy, alcohol, coffee)
    - give self one cheat day a week Feb 1-Dec 31
    - eat only whole foods (nothing processed)
VACATION:
    - take two out-of-town vacations
    - no computer, no phone, no TV
OFFLINE:
     - spend 24 straight hours per week offline
     - no computer, no phone, no TV

This seems feasible and attainable albeit a little hardcore. If it wasn't, I wouldn't be Melanie. I'm ready to take 2012 one step at a time.

Instead of resolutions, what have you decided to make your new habits?

Good for you! I think I especially like seeing that 24 hours of being "offline" -- because that means you will NOT be working, either! That makes for a healthier, happier life balance too! :)

Thanks, Deb! I set that because of your comment on my other post. I really do need a day off. Reading more lately about simplicity and how being able to focus on God gives us inner simplicity. Excited!

New Habits: Breaking the Mind & Body

Hebrews 12:7 - Endure hardship as discipline...

Standing at my counter while I make dinner, sweat drips off the back of my hair and onto my neck. It's Monday night and I just finished a really hard BodyCombat class. On Thursday, I ran the Turkey Chase 10K in 56min with my friend, David (@dcborn61). On Saturday, Joshua & I ran a 4+mile hill run and on Sunday, we hiked Stony Brook Park (and by hiked, I mean, climbed a LOT of precarious stairs up to the top of a mountain so we could see the falls pictured here). My muscles ache, I really need a shower and I'm starving, but man, I feel incredible.

I'm inspired to do something.

Evernote reminded me that I had notes from last Sunday (thank you for the sync from my phone!) and after reading through them, I realized that this is something that is obviously on my heart. Pastor Todd (@swirlyfoot) gave a sermon at Church in Bethesda about the saints. He talked about the tough things they went through to become saints but they were never all talk. They had action behind their talk & endured hardship. The sermon was pointed at getting off our butts & doing something instead of just talking about it. Todd told us that each of us could be a saint in our own right if we stopped just formulating ideas and went out to put them into action.

My initial thoughts for this post were about formulating a plan for the next month to get off my butt and show myself what I'm made of physically. The verse above, Hebrews 12:7, is the beginning of a few verses (seriously, go read them) that talk about how God is our Father disciplines us for our own good and and how even when our earthly fathers have done the same, we've respected them. Being able to discipline ourselves to action allows us to correct our own paths.

MIND:
Based on what the Bible is saying here, I know I must discipline my thoughts, my words and my actions to make sure I am wholly good and holy for Him. If I can do that, I'll be wholly good to everyone around me. Being a Christian is so much more than just going to church on Sunday and praying over dinner. And although some of you may not agree with me, being a Christian isn't about just telling everyone that God will save them. Being a Christian is about being an upstanding member of your community in everything you do. It's about who you are when nobody is watching AND when everyone is watching. Finding myself standing here knowing that I'm a leader in my small community, I know it's time to correct my path.

I've always struggled with prayer and downtime. I've always had a hard time just quieting my mind. Running helps  me quiet my mind (we'll get to that next) but otherwise, I'm a million miles per hour in thought. Being able to refocus my thoughts will allow me to be a better Christian AND a generally better human to my community. Ever been around yogis? They're incredibly peaceful to everyone around them. Hmm... we'll see how this goes.
 
BODY:
This goes back to me sweating and feeling amazing yet painful after a few straight days of working out. I'm disciplining my body to do what I want it to and it's respecting me for it. For the last few years, I've been pushing myself to do more but then I fall into a comfortable pattern and end up working out only 3x a week.. maybe. This year, running has become something of an addiction for me but sometimes what I put in my body (fried food, alcohol, etc) doesn't allow me to have the drive to get up and run the next morning. While in this space, I always wonder (even though I know) why I can't break the barrier that shows me what I'm really capable of. In order for me to see results from this discipline of my body, I need to get off my butt and make it a reality.

If you repeat a behavior over and over, it becomes a habit.

My plan is to make these two behaviors good habits. Thanksgiving is now over and Christmas is on its way. These aren't insane plans for having a killer body or being a Christian saint, but they are simple actions that I want to become a part of my lifestyle, not just a phase.

4-WEEK NEW HABITS CHALLENGE:
MIND:
- commit to praying every morning & every evening
- commit to 15-min of quiet time for just reflection every day
- commit to being in bed by 11pm & waking up by 6am every day
- commit to tracking thoughts on paper daily

BODY:
- commit to 30-60min of exercise every day
- commit to eating & drinking only healthy
- commit to stretching every morning
- commit to tracking exercise on DailyMile.com daily

Now that I've written it down and said I'd do it, it's on. I'm ready... are you?

1 Corinthians 9: 24-27. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 every athlete exercises self control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we are imperishable. 26 so I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air 27 but I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Since the ultimate goal is to be like Christ I thought this passage was pretty relevant to what you're trying to accomplish. Keep up the good work and be faithful to our God. He is so good.

Breaking the Marriage Mold! (again)

While enjoying a weekend away in Western NY, I glanced at the paper to see that, not far away in Seneca Falls, there was a celebration of Susan B. Anthony and the women’s suffrage movement. The next day, my mother and I just happened to drive by the movie theatre and made a last minute decision to see The Help. Both of these struck a deep chord with me.

Growing up as the oldest of four children whose parents were only 20 years older than myself, I was raised in a time where girls were expected to go to college after high school. Being from the country, I found that most girls my age weren’t finishing more than a year or two before becoming wives and mothers and spending their days at home. Although my mother was one of those high school graduates turned wife and mother, she was the voice that told me it wasn’t necessary to find a man and have children. A career should be my focus, not someone else.

Looking back to the early 1900’s when women’s suffrage was at its height, we see women who turned against the grain and fought for our rights, careers, choices, and futures. These women were different from those of their time because they were single (gasp!) and didn’t do what was expected of them. Moving forward to the 1960’s era of housewives depicted in The Help, we see women who went to college to get their “Mrs.” degree. They chose men who could take care of them & hired maids to take care of their children, cooking and cleaning while they played Bridge and setup charity events. Their education became useless.

Now we see women taking on corporate executive positions and leading non-profits instead of being someone’s Gal Friday. Women are taking bigger entrepreneurial risks and leading the way for the younger generations to prove that we can do more with less. We’re getting seats at the table now, but asLeslie Bradshaw asks “is that really enough?” Studies are showing that many women leave work before they leave work. Most of the time it’s due to getting married and planning for children. They don’t ask for raises or promotions because they plan to leave the workforce to stay at home with their future little ones. And then women complain that we’re not getting paid or treated equally.

Finding myself looking at my 30’s with great excitement for what’s to come, I see a woman not unlike the main character, Skeeter, in The Help. A young woman wanting to change the world, wanting to find her space by helping others. This gumption-filled character who went outside the confines of ‘normal’ and proved herself by taking a stand for others. She is someone to look up to, to become more like, to be humbled by. She’s the woman I want my nieces and nephews to look up to and my parents to be proud of.

About 10 years ago my mom had a conversation with a friend of hers who was single, 35 and waiting. She hadn’t even bought towels because she thought you had to be married to get towels as a wedding gift. My mom told her she needed to go do things because she wanted to. So, she went to Honduras on a missions trip, bought a house, finally bought towels and became happy with her life. She’d always been waiting for someone to be happy with and realized her life was waiting for her instead.

As a woman who seems to have it all together, I wonder why this notion of ‘what’s next’ keeps me searching for a ’someone’. Why is the next step always marriage and/children? Why can’t a big career and amazing friends/family be enough? Why is there always the comment “Oh, you’re pretty. You’ll find someone.”?

 It may not be 1890 or 1960 but we still have the requirement of marriage surrounding us as women. We’re taught to be independent and to find ourselves but when will we stop being looked at like there’s something wrong with us if we choose to be alone. Our lives aren’t based on our careers, but the end game always seems to be settling down. I look at the lives of most married women and see them looking at my life with wonderment. I think I’ll just keep on keeping on and see where life takes me next instead of trying to fit a mold the women of the 20’s & 60’s tried to break for me.

An Intentionally Happy Life

"Why don't I have ____?"

            "I'd be so much happier if ____?"

Ever catch yourself asking these questions of yourself? I finally quit... and guess who is happier than ever before? Me.

So many people think that if they had more, they would be better off. The grass is always greener. If you are single, you wonder what it's like to be married. If you're married, you wonder why you made that decision. If you don't have kids, you yearn for them. If you do have kids, you're happy to give them up for a night off. If you're in an unhappy job, you know you'd be happier working for yourself. If you work for yourself, you wish for the days of a steady paycheck. Greener... but is it?

At the beginning of this year, I set a goal of intentionality. I didn't do a New Year's resolution. No "I'll eat less and run more". No "I'll walk the dogs more." No "I'll take more time off." Just a goal of being intentional with everything I do because no one else was going to live my life better than me. 7.5 months later, I see the fruits of my intentional intentionality... and every day it's clearer.

No more worrying. When I set this goal, it was to put full faith that God had given me the tools and the strength to be a success. I finally started leaning on Him and with that I had to stop worrying about everything. Money, relationships, work, family, everyday details... Once I stopped, I was able to focus on what He really wanted for me - my best life. A life that was in place to help others accomplish and live their own.

I love my life. My friends, my family, my job, my coworkers, my clients, my dogs, my home, my office, my body, my goals, my everything. Nothing is perfect but man, I really love where I am a month from 31. I am happy, I am healthy, I'm in the best shape of my life, I'm a successful entrepreneur, I travel, I am full of faith... it's all coming together.

Being intentional about who is in my life, what I do with my days, and how I find peaceful rest each night knowing I'm living my best life is how I am able to just be happy.

Series: Easy, Healthy Summer Veggie Recipes

Last year I hosted a series called I Can't Cook & So Can You. We got a ton of great recipes that were quick and easy thanks to all the helpful people who submitted posts.

Now while doing the #4weekdetox, I've found that I eat a lot more fruit and snack on bad things a lot less but am really craving vegetables. I know I need them in my diet but I hate the taste of most of them. Force-feeding isn't helping so I am looking for some great summer recipes that are easy. 

Do you have a favorite summer recipe that's quick, easy and healthy? It has to be veggie-heavy. Send it over and help me figure out how to eat healthier without choking on broccoli. Now that I've got a fridge & freezer packed with healthy ingredients, I've decided to start writing about what I make. I honestly hate cooking. I haven't found a blog about a cook who hates cooking, only those who love it but want to teach others how to do it. I don't want to teach anyone, I just want to share my trials & errors with you all so if you want something simple to cook, here you go.

Melanie's First Week: #4WeekDetox

It's been a week & I'm still alive.

I've written before about my body image. I've told you all how much I hate my body… I still do and not because I'm trying to get any of you to say otherwise. It's my issue, not yours. I know I'm thin, I just hate my curves and bumps and love handles. My middle has been a source of disdain for the last 7 years and I've done everything in my power to make it go away… or so I thought.

A week ago I realized that two things were happening. 1. My middle area was not getting smaller no matter how much I worked out. 2. My intestines hated me almost every day. 

Why did I pick these?

I'd talked about doing a detox but couldn't figure out how to do it so I just kept putting it off. Knowing that I'm probably allergic to some of the foods I'm eating I decided to give up the 2 things most people have problems with: wheat & dairy. I also noticed that my sleeping patterns were all messed up and it was a crazy cycle of drinking caffeine every day then not sleeping because I'm naturally caffeinated as it is. Then because I didn't sleep, I'd need caffeine. Processed sugar & fried foods are just bad. End of that story. Alcohol became an issue when I realized that I was working way too much & felt the need to drink on my couch at home while I was working to make it not feel so stressful. I was drinking 4+ days a week and that also didn't help with my sleep habits and caused me not to want to go running. Now do you see?

First Week Report:

Aside from accidentally ordering ginger ale last night out of habit while out for a friend's birthday instead of my usual rum & ginger ale, I've stuck to the plan since last Sunday morning. 7 straight days.

  • Wheat: easy-peasy. I don't eat a lot of wheat as it is. I don't plan on adding much back into my diet after this is over.
  • Dairy:  isn't too bad since I'm not eating cereal or drinking coffee. I believe I'll be eating the giant container of Greek yogurt in my fridge this week though since it's too expensive to waste. 
  • Sugar: The hardest of all of the list. I want a cookie or something sweet after lunch/dinner and have SUCH a hard time breaking this habit. I didn't realize how bad it was until I gave it up and didn't give in. I'm a sugar-lush! Fruits have helped replace this but nothing is as delicious as a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie… !! 
  • Fried food: I do crave a big bowl of french fries but I have sweet potatoes that I may bake instead. I'm removing this from my diet wholly. No more fried foods ever.
  • Caffeine: The first few days were really tough. I went to work exhausted. Later in the week I realized I was sleeping better, feeling more alert longer and ended the week wide awake. This is something I'll be giving up for good.
  • Alcohol: This has been tough. I spent the entire first 6 days with just water. Nothing else. Yesterday I made a mocktail of 100% blueberry & pomegranate juice with seltzer water to help me through the craving.

Having friends support me and go through this with has been an amazing experience. It's been really rough but my whole being feels better and it's prompted me to hit my workout regimen much harder than normal. I'm heading into my 30's (31 shortly!) and want to make sure I hit them with a rock solid, hardcore body. Inside AND out.

Fasting: Time to Start Saving

FAST: I will stop 'spending' for a year. From 10/10/10 to 10/09/11.

My dad is a spender. My mom is a saver. I realized at 30 that I take after my dad. My mom taught me to be a frugal shopper, only buying what I need and only really spending money on quality items. My dad was always taking us to lunch or buying flowers for my mom or giving more than I knew he could to the church.

I'm not a shopaholic nor do I spend outside my means. I'm a big giver when I do have money and often find great things for my friends or family and give more to the church when I have it. Every once in a while I'll go on a little splurge but I've never been in debt. I have no credit card debt, no outstanding loans... I also never have any money.

I buy quality clothes but not designer stuff. I make sure to have staple items in my closet for all occasions. I rent an apartment with a roommate and never buy ostentatious things. I have driven and paid off the car I bought 6 years ago and have no plans on an upgrade any time soon. I have a dog that I am quite self-sufficient with between cutting his hair and bathing him myself. I do trade to get massages and my hair colored. I do my own nails. My roommate & I keep our thermostat low in the winter and high in the summer. I know how to keep my grocery bill down. You get the point.

All of those things would typically mean that I could easily save money. Yes, living in the DC area (man, it's expensive) & being a new business owner (sacrificing salary & spending savings to get things started) are two of the biggest reasons for not saving much lately but there's something more than that.

What caused this epiphany? Two things:

  1. A girlfriend told me a story about a neighbor of hers who can't stop spending. Patra told that neighbor that if she didn't buy one piece of clothing for a year that no one would notice.
  2. A 23-year-old girl I know lost her job, her car & her home and decided to sell everything else and go on a tour of the US to write a book about the homeless in every state and she's doing it! Check out www.shaykelley.com

A switch flipped in my head and I looked around me. I have a closet stuffed full of clothing that all fits and works for every occasion. I have all the electronics I could want (camera, laptop, phone). I have a normal set of bills but nothing I'm paying off. Aside from the daily life stuff, I already have absolutely everything I need to comfortably live for a year.

As a working American, I have access to anything and everything I can possibly need or want. If I lost it all, what would I do? As a business owner, I have to trust myself enough to make sure I keep income flowing but do I really need to keep spending?

Spending money on things I don't absolutely need has stopped today. No more Starbucks, no more weekend trips to my parents, no more online shopping, no more wine, no more purchasing for myself or others, etc. I have everything I need and if I need anything, I can make gifts or borrow items from friends.

I will set a monthly budget & stick to it for the following things:

  • bills
  • toiletries
  • groceries
  • dining out
  • tithing

With the money I hope to save over the next year, I want to:

  1. Take a real vacation
  2. Give more to my church
  3. Put money into my retirement
  4. Build a savings

This is something I need to do if I want to do the things my heart longs to do. Working 7 days a week and never seeming to save is getting old. It's time I started acting my age and started thinking about my future. Being healthy physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially will allow me to be the woman I set out to be.

Saving starts now!

These sound like great ideas. May I suggest that you also begin using cash instead of debit card for your budget items. It really helps you to stick to your weekly or monthly personal allowance. Good luck!

The decision to save for your future is a terrific one! Women live longer and too often devote more of their money to others' needs but not enough to protecting their own future and their retirement. And every entrepreneur needs a real vacation - to recharge, to enjoy life, to keep going. But keep the intent of your fasting idea, don't go overboard early and then give up or miss something important like family.

Body Image: The Ugly Duckling?

Look at this girl with huge, frizzy hair, oversized glasses, and that special, awkward grin only adolescence and a mouthful of braces can bring. That was me in junior high - the typical, awkward teen.

Astonishingly, I didn't get a lot of dates then. I wasn't one of the "pretty-pretties" - the popular girls, the cheerleaders. In retrospect my body was pretty amazing - I was a dancer, and didn't surpass 110 pounds until high school - but I hated that I was built like a Skipper doll, with no boobs and no hips. My skin was pale to the point where my mom begged me to wear blush so I "wouldn't look dead."

But one day in my mid-teens I was reflecting on the story of the ugly duckling, and made a decision to put mind over matter. I was going to tell myself that I was the most gorgeous, fascinating thing that walked the earth, and my own positivity would attract others and make me "date-able."

It actually worked. Suddenly I found it a bit easier to make friends and started getting a date here and there. I was more confident, or at least appeared to be. What people may not have realized was that my "ego" was just a facade covering a shaking, anxious, insecure self-image, desperate for approval from her peers.

But even though I'm well beyond my awkward phase, I still default to vanity-disguising-deep-insecurity mode, feeding off compliments and other people's perceptions of my body to determine my self-worth.

Not that I haven't tried to build legitimate confidence in my how I look. I work out five times a week, and women's magazines always say that physical exercise makes you feel better about your body, by getting you to focus on the things it can DO as opposed to the way it looks. But they always say that in the same breath as a headline that screams "Get flat abs now!" And when I'm gritting my teeth on the elliptical trainer, I can't say I'm mentally marveling at how my arms can go back and forth at the same time as my legs…I'm more focused on hoping the torture will be over soon.

And the reason I spend 30 minutes, five days a week torturing myself in the gym is because, like most women, I went through the inevitable post-college weight gain that led to the inevitable post-weight-gain obsession with diet and exercise. I find myself fixated on my own body shape and size to the point of obnoxiousness, especially in the summer. Not because summer brings swimsuit season, but because summer brings…SCI-FI CONVENTIONS.

Yes, I'm a big nerd, and I love to dress up like science fiction characters. But as part of my body complex, I intentionally choose a skimpy or tight costume months ahead of convention season, then use the costume as motivation to keep to a strict diet and exercise regimen. To my friends' and coworkers' annoyance, I spend months openly worrying about looking bad in a costume I myself chose to wear. (I'm amazed I have any friends left, honestly.) But despite all the crap I put myself and others through, getting positive reactions at conventions is priceless to me. Having people ask to take my picture while I'm in costume, telling me how great I look…it feeds my soul in ways I can't describe.

I know I'm not supposed to define myself by how others see me, but darn it, I'm human, and I'll admit that when someone unexpected says I'm beautiful or flirts with me, it quiets the stirring monster of self-doubt inside my brain for a few minutes.

It's not wrong to enjoy compliments - in fact, it sucks when somebody responds to a compliment with self-deprecation. But I should focus on building my confidence more from within than without. So by way of this blog post, I pledge I will try. Bit by bit, I will start reminding myself that I'm about more than my looks, and that I don't need compliments to feel good about myself. The frizzy-haired teen I once was is gone now, and even if I still yearn for bigger boobs, higher cheekbones, a tighter butt, smaller thighs, and six-pack abs, I don’t need to put on a mask for people to like me.

Body Image: My Body, I Thee Hate

Of All the Things I Love...

...my body isn't one of them.

I love pearls, and my vintage Montblanc pen. I love Louis Vuitton, especially the Damier Azure Speedy 35 I haven't put down since the day I bought it. I love high-waist pencil skirts and silk blouses. And there's nothing I would rather be wearing than a pair of 4 inch heels.

Don't get me wrong, I used to love my body. It was, at one point in the not to distant past, pretty darn great. It wasn't awesomely amazing, but it was better than most. I worked out pretty often. I ate some pretty healthy food and some pretty crappy food. I did pilates, and Zumba. And even though I hated it, I ran long (ok not that long, but long enough) distances. I rowed, (the machine, not a real boat). And my goal was nice abs.

Then some guy backed into me with a car. One year, an x-ray and an MRI, three steroids (including two spinal injections), ten prescriptions, and countless physical therapy sessions later, I'm still in pain and I've gained a ton of weight.

I don't know if you've ever tried to work out with severe back pain, but I have. I promise, its not fun. Every step I take hurts and reminds me of how much I took for granted before. Before, I complained about running; now I'd give anything to be able to do it and not feel like death is a more preferable option.

Now, I eat air. I eat food too, but after I'm done I feel like I might as well have eaten air. That's what salad and fruit do to you. They make you feel like you're starving. Sometimes I eat pizza or Chinese food for dinner. But that's what happens when: a) you live with a man; and b) you have a 2 hour commute.

Today, the third specialist I've seen finally figured out what's wrong with me. There's something going on with my sciatic nerve. Finally, they can fix me. I'm happy, but at the same time I'm a bit scared. I can't wait to be fixed so that it doesn't hurt to walk for 10 minutes. But then comes the hard work: losing the 25 pounds I've gained over the last year. On the one hand its pretty great because I might be able to lose weight and stop hating my body. On the other hand, I might not be able to and I'll hate it even more.

I truly hope and pray that your surgery helps you love your body again once more. Not because of anything related to weight, but because you will be able to regain so much ability from it while losing the pain.

Body Image: My Body is Capable

My name is Jennifer. I also hate my body.

That is, I hate my body until I REMEMBER.

Let me explain… I’m at this fragile state in my life. My self esteem seems to always be on a precipice. I am a 38 year old woman who’s body is beginning to betray her by falling apart. Grey hair has begun to make an entrance. Wrinkles now appear. And cellulite? Oh yeah. It is there. It is SO there.

I’ve struggled with body image issues since the age of 12. That is the year I first got my period and very rapidly grew breasts. (Much to the excitement of every middle school boy and to the chagrin of every middle school girl.) Sad to say but from that point on I was painfully aware of every female inadequacy that I possessed. Isn’t that sad?

I can count on one hand the number of times in my life where I felt confident and comfortable in my own skin. My body has never fit into society’s ideal image. And I have been keenly aware of that fact all of my life. It seems I have always been ill at ease with this body.

That is, until I remember what this body is capable of.

· This body has miraculously and safely birthed two healthy babies. It didn’t let me down. It is strong.

· This body has resisted major diseases and illnesses and way too many all-nighters. It is steadfast.

· This body has endured two marathons, countless half-marathons and one ridiculous 182 mile relay. It endures.

My body is not perfect. I am not anywhere near where I want to be. Intellectually I know that I am a beautiful, healthy, intelligent woman but in my mind’s eye, well, let’s just say there is a disconnect.

The challenge for me then is to not allow my body, my insecurities and my appearance become idols that take the place of God. It is when we remember the bigger picture and live a life of worship, putting God first, that there is freedom, joy, and peace.

Peace.

Being at peace with your body. Isn’t that a novel thought?

Just like with other aspects of life, when I lose sight of what my body was truly built for and instead focus on what society dictates, I become shackled to neurosis and chained to insecurity.

When I remember what this body is capable of and what it's greater purpose is, I gain a new perspective and I live free.

Body Image: Learning to Love It

Watching little girls run through a sprinkler on a hot summer day in adorable pink bathing suits with no shame makes me shameful.

Hi, my name is Melanie. I hate my body.

Growing up, I was always much taller than the other kids… and much thinner. This was terrifying in high school because I was just awkward and… too tall. I was so skinny that in 6th grade, I had already hit 6' tall but hadn't yet hit 100lbs. Models are that size - makes me sick. I couldn't gain weight.

I noticed that even after college I got a little more curvy but stayed thin. You would think I'd start loving the body I was blessed with but I struggled with it. I wanted what I didn't have, like so many women. I wanted curves, I wanted to be short, I wanted muscles, I wanted boobs - all things I couldn't seem to get, no matter what I did. Looking back, there were so many women that would have wanted my body especially since I didn't have to work at it.

When I was 25, I was a size 6, had been building muscle, was doing the Abs Diet to teach myself how to eat healthy. Out of nowhere, I started feeling terrible pain and was diagnosed with a stress disorder that, I was told, was only held at bay by eating foods that were not touched by the sun. Because I had been eating so healthy, it was triggered along with the stress I was under. This meant no wheat, soy, most fruit or veggies, no chocolate or peanut butter, nothing healthy… nothing. I put on 20 lbs in 6mo and started hiding my body. At 27, I was up to 165 and felt terrible every day. I lost all my energy and just got into a continuous cycle. Few people noticed the weight gain since 20 lbs spreads out on a 6' frame but I could feel it. Sitting down, wearing jeans, putting on anything remotely tight was just torture. I hid inside myself and just stopped caring.

In early 2008, I caught a running bug. I felt better, little by little. I lost weight quickly and reduced my stress greatly. Races & goals were set, training and pushing my limits allowed me to see what I could do. Every time I hit a goal, I would feel strong and confident. My clothes stopped being loose and started showing the results of my athleticism. I projected the confidence that I so badly wanted. They say that if we exude confidence in ourselves, others will want to be close to us. My body confidence is and always has been an act.

I am 6' tall, 152lbs, getting harder, tighter and stronger by the week. I am training for a half marathon that happens to be the day before my 30th birthday and the only reason I'm doing it is so I can look back at pictures of myself at 30 and say that I looked damn good. I am doing it for all the wrong reasons.

Every week I see more results from the 5+ days a week I'm either pounding a trail or hitting the gym. I see my shoulders getting tighter, I hear compliments on how much better I look, I feel the confidence I never had before because I was either too skinny or too fat for what I wanted to be.

All I see in the mirror are all the things I need to fix. My stomach, my love handles, the dimpled fat on the back of my legs, the backfat hanging over my bra, the things that NO one else will ever notice. I don't look at how I've strengthened my legs, I just see what I need to improve. I don't look at how I lack the double chin I had, I see that I have it when I smile too hard in pictures. I don't look at how strong my arms are getting, I just see the fat on the back of them that I need to lose. Every day I think about how I should be on a stricter diet, how I shouldn't drink because of the calories, how I shouldn't eat snacks because they're unhealthy. I am in an unending cycle and can't seem to get out of it.

My entire life, I've felt like I needed someone to tell me I'm beautiful so I could feel beautiful. I don't have the pain of having parents who didn't tell me - they did! They still do. I am the critical woman in the mirror. I know I am strong-willed - I'm a business owner. I know I have what it takes to make things happen - I connect people every day. I know that I have confidence - I speak at impromptu events where people need to learn from me. I am a strong, incredible woman with a lot to offer… yet I can't seem to figure out how to run without the narcissistic reasoning.

I am changing my way of thinking - just by saying this to whoever is reading. My new goal is to hit the gym & run, not to look better naked or in my bathroom mirror, but to find the confidence in my body that I am so greatly lacking. Not to be thinner, not to lose weight, but to be more disciplined. I am also realizing that my discipline will need to carry over into the other parts of my life… but more on that next time.

If you take anything from this, realize that you are an incredible woman. No matter what you've been told, no matter what you think about yourself. You are what God made you to be and if you're living that 'you', you're exactly what you should be. Love it. Once you love yourself, others will want to be close to you.

Melanie, I'm glad that you worked up the courage to post this. Because it's hard - really hard - to be this vulnerable to the world. And yet, we all need to be this vulnerable, to show others we're dealing with the same issues, because only then can we all work together to both change ourselves and change our society that encourages dysfunction. I too have struggled with loving my body....which was particularly difficult for me because I used to love it! Now, I am learning to respect it and I sure we'll fall back in love again. I'm taking a journey of changing my lifestyle and health & fitness are a major part of it.....and as you stated I'm certain that change in other areas will happen too!

Thank you, Melanie, for boldly taking on an issue that so many of us struggle with but don’t discuss. Joe, I know what you say is true. In my 12 years with an eating disorders program (I am long recovered, medically, from anorexia; visits are now annual) the number of men in the waiting room has risen substantially. At first I thought they were relatives of women in treatment. They're not. They're adolescents, college students, business execs and fathers who struggle with body image. Is it because our culture now believes in equally-opportunity brainwashing? Quite possibly. But some have told me they’ve been suffering for decades. Fortunately, it seems more are seeking help. My wish for everyone is that we can be gentler with ourselves and each other.

Thank you for sharing this and encouraging your friends and followers to read this. I think you are a gorgeous, amazing woman. It's crazy how nearly all women, no matter our size or shape, struggle with things we hate about our bodies. Together, maybe we can help each other accept ourselves as beautiful and healthy just as God and nature made us.

Wonderful post Melanie. You should know that there are some of us men out here who are struggling daily with the very same issues you describe. Most of us are too scared to admit it for fear of not being a "man". Well done, extremely brave and very inspiring.

Woman of Influence: Individual

It's an interesting thing being a woman. Reading the second chapter of Woman of Influence called "Individual: Discovering Your Leadership Style", I learned that women aren't inherently anything. We are all human beings just like the male population and have very different ways of doing things. We've been classified every which way from Tuesday and the world has finally realized that women shine in such different ways. Our lives and willpower can't be contained in a box or a kitchen. We need the freedom to be ourselves and get outside that box.

Women are very different from men - we work like men, at a steady pace, but tend to take breaks so we can refocus and re-energize. We are much more accessible and make a deliberate attempt to be. We tend to integrate home and work life and don't tend to have a definitive line between the two. Women tend to prefer live person contacts, are able to maintain a broad, complex network of relationships, have longer term focus, don't believe our career is how we define ourselves and love to share information & build relationships. This is powerful stuff. Men are pretty incredible and tend to have a better ability to see themselves as leaders but women are able to maintain a high level of energy. Obviously we need to fix how we see ourselves!

There are 5 types of leaders - we all fit into at least one of them. The test included in this chapter helped me realize that I'm a bit of a Provider, Proclaimer and above all, a Praiser. Let me explain:

1: Provider - Providers see a need and quietly go about providing it. They see the details, work quietly and consistently. Tend to be the people that keep organizations running.

2: Petitioner - Petitioners are advocates. They usually work in law or social work. They want to make a positive difference.

3: Preparer - Preparers are teachers. They want to give their knowledge away and give others the tools to be the best at what they can be.

4: Proclaimers - Proclaimers love to talk. They're usually drawn to sales, service, being a spokesperson or actor. They are storytellers and are typically not born proclaimers but raised to meet God's needs.

5: Praiser - Praisers lead by encouragement. They coach their teams to success. Typically have a strong faith and know God is running the show. They give praise to the people who work with them and stay in touch with people important to them.

I was a bit surprised that #5 was the highest out of all of them. #4 is definitely one that fits me well. I was really introverted as a child but thrive heavily on being around people, especially in my downtime. I enjoy the spotlight but am always trying to give all my knowledge to other people. It really shows me that I need to make sure to give my staff the appreciative notes, show my support for what they're doing and allow them to flourish by hearing that they are on the right track. I've always had a better time in a job when I am being told when things are going well. Many of my previous bosses would tell me when I did something wrong but rarely when they were excited about the good job I was doing.

God has a specific leadership style for you - maybe you don't know what it is or exactly how to be that leader but He will make sure you grow into it. I have learned more about myself and who I really want to be by becoming a boss. I learned from so many bosses in the past that I know what I want to do and definitely what I don't. Taking my leadership style and honing it to fit just what my staff needs is key.

This passes over into the other portions of our lives. In relationships, in friendships, with family, with church family, with acquaintances, with life in general - we need to be the best leader we can be. We don't have to be 'over' or 'above' someone else but we can show by example that we are influential in the most positive way we can be.

Be an individual. You're not like everyone else. Enjoy it and learn how to use it the best way you can!

New Year, New Goals

2010 - the year I turn 30 has recently begun. Scary? No... Overwhelming? Yes.

I am a goal setter & typically accomplish the goals I set out for. Looking back over the last 10 years is an eye opening experience for someone on her way to 30. Some goals met, some set without full knowledge & later abandoned, others pushed back for future accomplishment.

When I was in college, I started a business called E-Spring Works (later known as Sisarina). E-Spring Works did a great job at helping local businesses with their websites (a rather new thing to do in 2001) and showed me that running a business was definitely something worth pursuing. This month marks the 9th anniversary of my being a sole proprietor. I was able to have that be my sole income for 2 years before deciding to work for 'the man' for more real world experience. I started my business at 20 in the year I was to turn 21. My goal was to be successful enough to purchase a newer car - a few months later, I hit my goal & upgraded my 1989 Chevy to a 2000 Olds Alero in cherry red. Mission accomplished.

As a high school student, I had set my life plans to go to college, get a job, get married & have babies before I was 25. I very quickly realized that I was behind in the getting married part, so I moved across the country and at 23 jumped at the chance a little too quickly, later realizing how uninformed I was of myself & what I really wanted. The children part of my plans was also set aside when I divorced and found the company of a dog much more enchanting than the company of children. I started to change my goals to seek out a career that made me happy instead of people.

I later became a homeowner due to having the dog and feeling like it was a very adult thing to do but failed miserably when the economy went into the circular file. It was just not the place I was meant to be. I then moved across country again to continue a career I wasn't happy in only to find the field I had majored in during college & a company that fit my life goals. My ultimate goal once again was to become a business owner by 30.

Mid-2009 found me in the perfect opportunity to enjoy sole-proprietorship once again along with partnerships that allowed me to be completely on my own. By the time I hit my 29th birthday, I was in full swing ready to show the world my stuff. Sisarina was launched again in full tilt, hiring staff, growing partnerships & local relationships and obtaining & renovating office space in the rich DC suburb of Bethesda, MD.

In early 2008, I started running, signing up for races of all shapes & sizes with the intent to hit the goals I had set for myself. Stepping up to the starting line of each race is the intent to finish, however it is that may happen. I've now finished two 5K's, two 10K's, one 10-miler, and one Half-Marathon. I am training over the next 3 weeks to complete my second Half-Marathon on the C&O canal trail. It's different training in the middle of winter for a trail race compared to training for anything else but I plan to complete it, fast or slow.

My current goals have now all been accomplished - and over a year earlier than expected! I am 29, successful, have a very loyal staff and am thoroughly enjoying the blessings God has presented me with. The trials to reach this point have not been easy but God never said He would make it easy - He just said I'd never have to do it alone. I am reminded daily, even by those in my office, how much God loves me & is obviously taking care of me. He's blessed me with an incredible family of friends and those relationships are my biggest accomplishment.

A few months ago, I realized that I knew very little about my religious beliefs. I know I am a woman of faith & that God is my purpose for being here but I found that I wanted to know more. I do a daily devotional for women who are busy, which gives me snippets to think about throughout the day but I didn't feel that was enough. Even being a very active member of my church caused me to find I was missing something. My church is doing a bible study for the next few months on Daniel L Migliore's 'Faith Seeking Understanding'. It's a captivating book allowing you to be a thinker, not just a doer. I have never been one to be told what to believe & then just accept it. I've always challenged the things others believe but want to know more about how my faith is challenged and upheld. I don't feel I know it all but I feel like God has some things to show me this year.

My goal for 2010 is not to work out more, eat healthier, be a better person or find true love. I'll try to do all those things but I don't feel they are goals I need to set. My goal for 2010 is to find out more about my faith & understand it enough to be able to have a conversation about it. To know why I believe it and not because I was told to. My second goal this year is to live my faith, not just talk about it. Living worship is key... and I intend to unlock it.

Looking Upward

"A worrying Christian is better called an Atheist," my pastor said in a sermon once. We believe that God will take care of things and then start worrying about all the details. Shouldn't we leave it all up to Him, leaning on Him knowing that He always takes care of things? Easier said than done for the mere mortals we are.

It always seems that when one thing goes bad that a bunch of others have to go with it. It can't just be a friendship ending, it has to be family issues and financial stuff added to it. When I start worrying about things I can't sleep, I don't eat and my back gets all tensed up. I end up a wreck and wondering where things went wrong. Most people feel this way when their life just gets completely out of whack.

When bad things happen, our first reaction is to ask ourselves what we did. I know that some of the things that have gone bad recently are because of my big mouth and others are things that are deep hurts from half a lifetime ago that won't ever be healed properly. Otherwise, we and the people around us may ask if we have a secret sin that could have caused God's wrath. If we are walking with God and knowing that He is in charge, we need to stop looking inward and start looking upward. Even 'good Christians' sin - we all do. No one can escape it and no one will be perfect but our walk needs to be in line with where God is going so that we can continue to be forgiven.

I was raised to feel guilt, lots and lots of guilt. My parents didn't exactly make me feel this way but the church definitely did. They list sins and tell you that you need to make sure not to commit them or God will let Satan take over. The church has a great way of making 'fire & brimstone' statements that scare us into God's presence instead of realizing that God is a loving God with His arms open wide.

The mindset I have had for 30 years is that if I commit a sin, I'll be punished for it. If I don't do exactly as I'm told, I'll have things taken away. I live wondering daily if something I did, thought or said recently might have caused the grief in my life. Wondering if God will cause my business to stop being profitable if I think something bad about someone. I try so very hard to live the way He has asked me but the guilt that wells up in me makes me wonder if I'll ever be able to attain what He has set out for me.

This last month has shown me that people can change if they put their mind to it.
  • Removing all soul-ties to past relationships that need not be in my future was a tough but rewarding thing I accomplished recently and continue to accomplish every day.
  • Putting God first in my life and making sure I spend some time with His word and in prayer each day has been very focusing.
  • Growing a business that will help businesses grow, help my employees build a knowledge-base for future use and give me the satisfaction that I am making a difference has been a challenge that I've jumped into with both feet.
  • Reading my devotions and other books that will allow me to see things from a different perspective.
  • Being more active in the community around me and in my church family.
I have been reading 'Humility: True Greatness' by CJ Mahaney and 'The Peacemaker' by Ken Sande lately and have been finding so many things in my life and reactions to others that need to be changed. Growth is the keyword for my 30th year of life and taking that step into the unknown of my 30's is something I want to do with grace, patience, humility and excitement. Worrying will always be something I do but I plan to start looking upward more than inward wondering what I did wrong to deserve the pain.

I hope you find peace in looking up, at whatever you think is up there.

Spiritual Journey: Pre-Sleep Reflections

Before your head hits the pillow at night, you start to review your day... sometimes your week and at other times the month. You say your prayers and ask that God helps you by giving you peace about your decisions, the direction of your life and who you have become. As a child you might have recited the old poem/prayer:
Now I lay me down to the sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
and if I die before I wake

I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Amen.

When you really think about it, you're tucking yourself into a little cocoon of quietness and peace where you can empty your mind and allow everything to complete itself as you drift off to sleep. This is where my problem lies. As much as I wish, pray and hope that my mind will quiet, it doesn't. As much as I beg for peace in my sleep, I never find it. When my daily life is so overwhelming through business and personal interactions, most of which I bring upon myself, I have so much to think about before I fall asleep. This, in turn, causes nightmares which causes random mornings of frustration which bleeds out throughout the day and then a calming overtakes me when I have been bled out.

My spiritual journey has kind of taken a quiet leave of absence for the last week or so. I continually do my devotions and seek time with God to pray and reflect but I seem to do more apologizing than listening. I get small epiphanies throughout the day about how I want to change, grow, listen, reflect and generally spend my time with God but I rarely write them down so I can remember them and learn from them. I know that He is still up there listening to me and hearing my cries for peace & quiet but when I can spend 2 hours fiddling around with work and only 5 minutes in His presence, is that ever going to be quite enough? It's a similar feeling with the piano. Over the last few days, I've walked by the piano in the chapel and glance in and tell myself I'll take 15 minutes to go play it and sing with the incredible acoustics but then I never do. Something that could give me so much pleasure, just like God, gives me nothing because I don't take it.

I have realized even more so lately that I've been given incredible women in my life to keep me occupied while I try to live in my 'non-dating' world. Dating my girlfriends has become quite an honor and an adventure that I am happily growing into. I met with a few of the #DCTwirlies on Tuesday and some of the late-30's women were talking about how it seems that they were pushed as college grads to move into the next step of life which was marriage and kids. They realize now that it might not have ever been what they were to do and they are happy with how their lives have turned out. Single, entrepreneurs with great friends and a healthy, traveling lifestyle. I listen to them at almost 29 and find myself happy to hear it. Everyone keeps saying 'you have time' - what do I have time for? What if I don't want time? I am very happily settled into my life as a single entrepreneur sans children.

As I've said before, I have a hard time being 'alone' but really enjoy my alone time. My ex-husband is re-married, my most recent ex is already actively dating and I've realized that the lyrics are true: 'You aren't the first, you won't be the last. I don't have anything you want, you don't have anything I need.' I'm happy that everyone is finding what they are looking for... I've just come to realize that I don't know enough about me to even know what it was if it smacked me on the mouth. That is what this year is for... finding what I need, figuring out what I want and, in the end, being me. My friends like me and it's not like I only have 2 friends. I like me, which is more than I could ever have said 6 months ago.

This is my stream of pre-sleep thoughts. Maybe if they are released from my head onto this screen I'll have purged them all along with the Barbies I dropped in the trash last night.
